Just call Nick Dunlap Mr. 59!!! At 12 Years Old!!!
This afternoon while playing in a Birmingham Golf Association junior event at the historic Highland Park Golf Course, Greystone's 12-year old golfing phenom Nick Dunlap fired his first 59!
Nick is already in the field for the 16th Annual 2016 Greystone Invitational and at 12-years old will be by far, the youngest player ever to compete in the event. He received his exemption into the field by virtue of winning the Greystone Junior Club Championship.
It was apparent early on in the round that this would be a special round for Nick after opening birdie, eagle, birdie at Highland Park.
He would finish the front nine with an amazing 8-under par 28!!!!
No doubt the 59 watch was on at this point and when Nick eagled the par-5 12th hole to move to 10-under par, it was now well within his grasp!
Nick only needed a birdie on one of the last six holes to shoot the magical 59. After pars on the next five holes, he made his way to the 18th where he sunk a 2-footer for birdie to reach 11-under on the par 70 course.
For the day, Nick had nine pars, seven birdies and two eagles! No wonder he was all smiles in the photo below!
The Highland Park Golf Course was originally established in 1903 as the Country Club of Birmingham which makes it the oldest golf course in Alabama. It has been the site of many important golf events including one of golfer Bobby Jones’s first victories. At the age of 14, Jones played and won the Birmingham Country Club Invitational held at Highland Park.
When you think about the storied history of Highland Park Golf Course, this has to rank right up there with one of the greatest rounds ever played there.
Not a stranger to going low on a golf course, Nick shot a 64 on the Greystone Golf & Country Club's Founders Course just two days earlier on Monday to win that BGA event!
We are very proud of Nick and wish him the best of luck this coming week at the Press Thorton Future Masters in Dothan, Alabama and then back home at Greystone to play in GI 2016!
